Through-the-Wall System
One of the most popular, reliable and least expensive styles used in private cellars is a “through-the-wall” configuration, in which a self-contained air conditioning unit is mounted literally through the wall. Some of these systems have a fairly limited cooling capacity and are primarily for smaller wine cellars.
Things to consider are whether the unit complements the look of the cellar, is relatively quiet and is energy efficient. You also want to make sure that it has the ability to duct warm condenser air away from the area to create a more comfortable living space.
Above all else remember that a regular room air conditioner is not an alternative to purchasing an air conditioner specifically designed for use in a wine cellar from a reliable manufacturer.

Ducted System
More versatile than self-contained systems these systems offer more flexibility when it comes to design and installation. A grille on the inside wall is connected by insulated flexible duct work to a self-contained unit outside the cellar that contains the evaporator, fan and condenser. A ducted system can be installed in any convenient indoor location outside the cellar resulting in a more quiet cellar that has no obtrusive equipment taking up space.
Split System
Split systems include two separate mechanical elements (condenser and evaporator) that can be used when ducting is not feasible, especially when the condenser must be installed outdoors or in an unheated space, such as a garage.With a split system you have an evaporator fan inside the cellar connected by refrigeration tubing to the condenser which is located outside the cellar.
It should be noted though that unlike the other systems, split systems must be installed by licensed electrical and refrigeration technicians. The split system can be sized for any sized cellar.
